Do schools kill creativity?

What are the speaker's main ideas? Do you agree with him?

  1. (Hi Christina and Sotiria… Finally I write in your blog:P)

The speaker’s main idea it that although students can be very talented in art, music etc, school makes them feel like they are not, and it prevents them from achieving their goals. He mentions a few things that prevent children from being creative. First of all, he says that children, by their nature, are not afraid to be wrong. But the main problem comes from their families because they usually stigmatize their mistakes. In addition, he mentions that people should be educated by creative activities, sth that is not happening today, because as he says “we don’t grow into creativity, we grow out of it”. Finally, about school, he insists, that nowadays a lot of people graduate from school, and the only think that they gain (except knowledge) is to underestimate their self.

I totally agree with the speaker. In our days, children are taught things that have to do with maths, history etc. They also have lessons about music and art, but only in theory. This prevents children from leaving their self free.

  2. Wow, Helen, what a comment! I think you have hit the nail on the head; this means that you have said exactly the right thing! These are the speaker's main ideas, the most important one being (as you have correctly pointed out) that the kids are prevented from freeing themselves and entering a world of endless creativity. Is there a way to correct this faulty educational system?

  3. There is always a way to correct things. For exaple, teachers should not be very strict to lessons like art, music, literature or poetry (poetry is especially in engish schools). They should leave students to express their ideas, feelings no matter if it will be right or wrong. In my opinion, this is the most serious factorin order to make children more creative.

  4. Yes, you are right. I, too, share the opinion that art and literature should not be an examination nightmare, but rather a means of self-expression, serving as an outlet for the students' emotions. Will Greece ever manage to offer its citizens such quality education? No-one knows what the future has in store for us, but let us hope for the best!

  5. If they want to offer a better quality education, only teachers will, will change this. To be honest, i do not really think that they care, that much, so as to change the way these lessons are taught.
